Many alcoholic drinks have their own distinctive glasses, such as champagne, wine and brandy, but the whiskey glass came a little later. The glass makers Glencairn Crystal were established in 1980, and they claim to be the original creators of the whiskey glass as we know it today. The design starts off with wide curves towards the bottom, allowing the whiskey to move from side to side with the slightest of movements. The mouth of the glass is comfortable to drink from, but it’s designed to guide you to ‘nose’ the whiskey before drinking it.
Many whiskey distilleries around the UK now brand their own whiskey glasses, which tend to take on this distinctive shape. With so many complex flavours, whiskey is deserving of its own glass, and you can understand why so many different companies now claim to be the true creator of this spectacularly designed glass. Next time you’re at home sipping on an exceptional whiskey, make sure you enjoy it the right way, in a classic tumbler.
